black hole cinematheque and Castle Thunder presents Edgar G. Ulmer’s The Black Cat (1934) preceded by the animated shorts Felix Switches Witches (1927) and Hell’s Bells (1929)

Widely considered Ulmer’s masterwork, The Black Cat brings the legendary duo of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff together (their first onscreen pairing) in a stunning reinterperitation of Poe’s dark tale that fuses a potent mixture of Satanism, narcotics, perversity, and German Expressionist filmmaking. Completed only months before a destrucive tightening of the Motion Picture Production Code would be implented, thus altering the climate of artistic freedom in Hollywood, The Black Cat survives as a testament to a dark pinnacle of uncensored vision.
